Facility Guidelines
General Guidelines

To ensure the safety and enjoyment of all members, we kindly ask you to obey our policies and guidelines while inside the YMCA facilities. Please respect all rules and regulations set by each branch. Failure to do so will result in a termination of membership.PART I Listed below are rules set forth by the adminstrative offices.  In PART II you will find Health and Fitness Guidelines

Accidents and Injuries
The majority of YMCA staff members are CPR and First Aid certified. Any accidents or injuries should be reported immediately to a Y staff person.

Alcohol
Anyone suspected of using alcohol or drugs will not be permitted in the facility and will be asked to leave.

Animals
Animals are not permitted in YMCA facilities, except for Seeing Eye Dogs.

Attire
Workout clothes (athletic shorts, t-shirts, sweats or leotards) and appropriate footwear are recommended in most facility areas. Street shoes are not allowed on wood floors or in pool areas. Proper swimming suits are required. Open-toe sandals and belts with buckles are forbidden on fitness equipment.

Child Supervision
Children 10 years and younger must be under direct adult supervision when using the facility or participating in a supervised program activity. For their safety, children are not permitted in certain area of the facilities. Please respect guidelines set by each branch concerning children.

Equipment
Fitness equipment is cleaned regularly; if in disrepair, please notify the staff immediately.

Facility Usage Restrictions
Use of select areas of facilities may be restricted to certain age groups and supervisory requirements. Some hours of operation and areas of the building may be closed to members during Y special events. Members can generally use other areas of the YMCA or another facility at such times.

Food and Beverage
Food and beverages with the exception of water bottles are not permitted in workout areas. Some refreshments are provided by the YMCA.  Vending machines are located on the second floor and on lower level.

Gymnasium Guidelines
Apply the rules of good sportsmanship at all times. Anyone who abuses the YMCA court or property, or plays in a reckless and dangerous manner will be asked to leave and may lose membership privileges. Always follow specific open gym hours. Holidays and Days Closed
The Y will be closed on the following holidays:

  • New Years Day
  • Easter
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day
  • During annual maintenance in late August, parts of facility may be closed for cleaning. Notices will be posted.

The YMCA has the right to close facilities and cancel classes due to special events, inclement weather, and other Y-related programs and events.

Member Communications
This is your YMCA. Make your concerns, questions or comments known! Messages can be sent via email, Member Comment forms, or please feel free to speak directly with any member of our staff.

Publications
Information can be found in a number of ways.

  • Program Guide Supplement, published 5 times a year and mailed two weeks prior to program registration, to members
  • ENews, a monthly electronic newsletter emailed to members that register for classes on line or who have subscribed for the newsletter through this website (Summit Area YMCA home page)
  • Press Releases and articles appear in local news media including newspapers: Summit Observer, Independent Press , The Item of Millburn/Short Hills; Monthly News Magazines: Summit Collection,  Vacinity Magazine, Women's Journal, Kids Guide, Family of Union/Essex, and Parent Guide. 
  • Community Cable Television: Local TV36.  The Y Triangle, a new monthly televised show will airs on TV36 and can be viewed in all of the Y's service area.

PART II: Health and Fitness Guidelines

Health & Fitness Center

 

THINK SAFETY FIRST!
  • Children under 13 years are not permitted in the Fitness Center.
  • We strongly recommend that new members take advantage of free fitness orientations in order to get the most out of workouts without risking injury. Schedule appointments at Member Services.
  • Please bring your own towel to wipe perspiration off equipment after each use. Paper towels and cleansers are also available.
  • Please respect time limit restrictions on all cardiovascular equipment. Sign-up sheets are provided for specific machines.
  • All equipment should be treated with care. Please do not drop or slam weights during use. Always use control to raise and lower the equipment.
  • Please follow proper protocol when using strength training circuit. This calls for members to perform one set and let the next member take a turn on the exercise.
  • If there is a problem with any equipment, please do not try to fix it yourself. Please bring any problems our staff's attention immediately.
  • Proper attire is required while exercising. This consists of athletic shorts, sweats, t-shirt and sneakers. Street clothes are not acceptable exercise attire.
  • Personal Trainers are available for a fee. Only YMCA certified personal fitness trainers are eligible to provide personal training at the Y. Outside trainers are prohibited.
  • Hours of Operation
    Facility hours vary for each branch. Although we make every effort to give advance notice, our hours may change without prior notice. Always check with Member Services for details.
  • Hours at THE LEARNING CIRCLE follow school schedule (7:30 a.m.- 6:00 p.m.)

Locker Rooms and Showers
All branches provide separate male and female locker rooms. Members and their guests must provide their own padlocks for lockers and must remove them when leaving the facility. Unless you rent a locker, please use lockers marked "Daily Use Only." Locks left on overnight will be removed by Member Services.

Locker rentals are available for member use. See Member Services for details.

Lock Boxes
Small lockers are located on the main and lower levels to keep valuables such as watches, wallets, jewelry, etc. This is a FREE services. Tokens are available at the front desk.

Lost and Found
The YMCA is not responsible for lost or stolen property. However, the Member Services staff keeps items turned in for a period determined by each branch. Please use a locker and lock at all times. Please leave your valuables at home; the YMCA is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Medical Check-ups
A pre-participation medical check-up is highly recommended before starting any exercise program. A new member health & fitness evaluation and health history inventory are reviewed with a fitness staff member before the start of any health & fitness program.

Smoking Policy
YMCA facilities are smoke-free environments.

Towel Service
The Summit YMCA offers towel service for a small fee paid yearly or daily. Contact Member Services for information.
