BLACK AND LATINO ACHIEVER PROGRAMS
The Achievers Program is committed to motivating minority youth by giving them support, direction and opportunities to determine, pursue and achieve their personal, academic and career goals. The presence of strong adult role models from the minority community is critical to the success of the program. The Latino
Achiever program has a bilingual and bicultural component which
offers support for strengthening English as a second language.

Career Workshops
Young, Aspiring Entrepreneurs
In this 4 session workshop learn to become an entrepreneur, develop a business plan to run middle and high school dances throughout the year.
Teen Talk TV Series
Direct, produce, perform and star in the Black Achievers TV Program on Channel 36 concerning teens.
Black Achievers Newsletter
Have an important role in developing and distributing the Black Achievers Newsletter. Develop your writing and communication skills.
Corporate Mentoring*
A week-long program, sponsored by Novartis Pharmaceuticals. Learn about career opportunities available in the corporate world, work with minority professional who will serve as your mentor.
Professional Development Workshop*
Prepare for the difficult transition from an academic environment to a work and professional one. Learn how to construct a resume and explore various career directions. Workshop open to parents and graduates of the Black Achiever Program. 6 sessions, April 19 to May 3, Fee $20, limit 15.
Education Worshops
Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration
Help the Black Achiever program pay tribute to the life of Dr. Martin Luther King. Workshop will culminate in a performance on January 16,2007
SAT / PSAT Workshop*
Improve your scores and get familiar with the new PSAT / SAT format. Learn test-taking strategies.
College Prep / College Tour*
This workshop meets for 6 weeks for high school students and parents. Learn about the college application process, how to choose a college, student life. Included is a tour of local and out of state college
Debate Team
A comprehensive program that is designed to accelerate crital thinking through debate. Achievers will debate on topics dealing with local, state, national and international issues of policy and ethics.

Cultural Workshops
Civil Rights and the Nonviolent Movement
A four session workshop exploring Martin Luther King Jr.’s leadership during the Civil Rights Movement and the message it has for us today. The session will culminate in a presentation through words, poetry and music on Martin Luther King Day celebration.
The Poetry Primer
Share your poetry and learn how to improve your writing skills. Featuring visiting poets and poetry readings.
Latin Leaders, Saints and Revolutionaries
In this 4 session workshop we will try to understand the heart and mind of various Latin American Leaders, an how they have influenced the Latino consciousness.
Hands on Latin American Art
Learn about the rich heritage of Latin America through art history and hands on projects. In this 2 session workshop we will explore Maya and Aztec art and later Latino artists.
Latino Achievers Newsletter
Wanted Reporters, writers and aspiring journalists. A workshop for newsletter staff.
Spotlight on Public Speaking
In this workshop learn the basics to become an effective speaker, in front of the classroom or any environment.
Latin Drama
Be Part of the making of our own LA Novella during this creative project workshop creative work. Help tell the story. Discover your gifts on or off camera.
Personal Goals American Style
What is this American Dream? In this 2 session workshop we will talk about cultural differences and ways to find success. Session I Oct 11 & 18,
*The Culture Y Exchange
Teens will have an opportunity discover the world of visual and performing arts. Explore local cultural places and events, as well as visits to New York’s cultural locations.
*Service Saturdays
Service learning days for YMCA teens. Achievers and Leaders can participate in community service projects.
