Sue's Nutrition Notes

Still wondering what to do about those carbs? In late-December, news reports stated that the low-carb craze was on its way out. Good riddance. “There’s no magic bullet when it comes to weight loss,” says Sue Fieseler, a nutritionist who offers nutritional counseling at the Summit YMCA. “Diets don’t work. The key to losing weight, as it has always been, is to watch your portions and get moving. You need to burn more calories than you take in.”

Fieseler recommends adhering to the basics of a healthy, balanced eating plan: eat a variety of foods, including lean meats, poultry and fish, grains and lots of fruits and vegetables. An occasional treat should be no big deal, so long as you’re keeping physically active on an almost daily basis. “Studies show that to achieve long-term results, you must combine proper nutrition along with exercise,” she says. “There are no short cuts. Don’t think in terms of diet, think in terms of making a lifestyle change—a lifestyle you can live with and one that will let you live longer and healthier.”
